A magazine about school buses?

In August 1994, I saw a classified ad in the local newspaper. It read something like this: "Managing editor needed for bus mag. Good working environment." Seeing that I was unemployed and likely to stay that way unless I developed some curiosity about editing jobs with bus mags, I called about the listing and a few days later was hired as senior editor at SCHOOL BUS FLEET magazine.

School buses? Why would anyone publish a magazine about school buses? What have I gotten myself into? I asked myself these questions repeatedly as I got started with my new job. Then I found out that the company, then called Bobit Publishing, also put out magazines about nail salons, security alarm installers and limousines. Hmm, I thought, maybe school buses aren't so bad after all.

Now, 13 years later, my initial apprehension about working for a school bus magazine seems not just inappropriate but almost bizarre. Covering the school bus industry has been a wonderful experience and has allowed me to meet hundreds of dedicated professionals, many of whom have become good friends. Now, I can't imagine not being a part of this industry, although that will soon change.

If you haven't already guessed, this is my going-away speech, inadequate as it is. Friday will be my last day at SBF and its parent company, Bobit Business Media. Next week I will throw myself headlong into a new business venture — creating an online job board for the transit industry. Eventually, it will be located at www.TransitTalent.com. If you remember, visit the site when it's up and running in a couple of months and let me know what you think.

In the meantime, be assured that SBF is left in capable hands. Tom McMahon, managing editor, will be promoted to executive editor and will take over the editorial helm. He'll be assisted by Claire Atkinson, associate editor, and Kelly Roher, assistant editor. I'm confident that Tom, Claire and Kelly will do a fantastic job in my wake.

Also, I'm not completely severing my ties to SBF. In the months ahead, I will be doing some freelance writing for the magazine and will serve on the editorial advisory board. You can't get rid of me that easily!

So, I guess this is not goodbye. It's more like, see ya later.

Thanks for making this such a great industry.

Best,

Steve

My feelings about this news is mixed with many emotions.

Judging by the passion, professionalism and talent that you have poured into this magazine, I know you will succeed with your new career. Having the confidence to go after your dreams, and make this decision which affects your family's life as well, is a huge step. I am very proud of you and I wish you well.

But on the other side of the coin, I respect your involvement with this Industry and look forward to reading your stories. You have done exceptionally well with providing us with information and venues in which we can learn from and better ourselves. You have even provided us with this blog so that we can gain knowledge and strength from each other. You will be missed.

As you know, I am also starting a new journey. Without your initial belief in me, this might not have been possible. Thank you for believing in me and for allowing me the chance to be heard.

I can speak for many when I say, you will be missed. Gone, but not forgotten. My best wishes to you Steve.

Now, lets go out there and put wings on our dreams!

You're right, Steve. Nobody I know decided they wanted to be a school bus professional when they grew up. Fortunately, though, thousands of us ended up there. There is something to the old cliche about having yellow blood. It's a lifelong love, and there is nothing you can do about it! You have been a superb contributor, dare I say leader, for our profession. To paraphrase your Governator, "You'll be baacck."

WOW, I sure hate to see you leave the magazine. Your poignant perspective on the many issues we face on a day to day basis has contributed a great deal to the professional growth of us in the field. I am happy you will remain in touch with pupil transportation . . .you have been such a positive advocate for yellow school bus transportation safety for the millions of children who use this service each day.

Good luck to you in your new position.

Steve, you WILL be missed! Thanks for all you've done to promote and educate folks on how the school bus industry works. You've been a very valuable asset, and to echo Charlie Hood, also a leader of our profession. Thanks again, and please stay in touch! Best of luck..........

Steve, I've greatly enjoyed your editorials and respect the work you've done to promote our industry and challenge us to always strive to improve. You'll be missed, but I know you'll be a great asset to the transit industry, which I also know something about and have ties to. Best wishes to you as you enter the next phase of your successful career. By the way, like many of us, I got into the school bus industry quite by accident, and 43 years later, I'm still here and very happy to have made this career decision.

Best of luck to you, Steve!

I'm sad to see you go Steve but happy for your new opportunity and the fresh challenges it will bring to you.

Thanks, too for the help you gave me several years ago when I was going through a tough time with a toxic boss. I still appreciate it!

I will have to check out the new website when it is up and running and point my colleagues in the transit industry your way.

Keep in touch!

Great.. Just get used to seeing your smiling face at the bus shows.. and pooof... there he goes, just like the exhaust emissions of an old crown school bus. All joking aside, it was a pleasure to see your face at the "Charter Bus" shows. Your understanding of both sides of the bus business will be missed.

I agree with Charlie Hood, but his comment needs to go one step further...yes, busing gets in the blood but I also think it's genetic!Three generations of my family have driven school bus in northern Illinois.

Steve, I'm at a loss for words! You've become a close friend through this magazine and now your blog. Your timely topics and true understanding of our industry have given you the tools to help so many of us with your articles and your blog. To read responses, from so many drivers, managers, directors, etc. is genuinely rewarding. It's extremely interesting to read how other school districts and contractors handle their problems. I hope your successors will continue the blog.

The best of luck to you, Steve. I know how important it is to constantly challenge yourself and to keep the creativity alive and well. I'll look forward to your occasional articles in SBF.

Steve -- What a surprise! Congratulations on your new venture -- I am sure you will be as successful in the transit arena as you were in the school bus arena.

I personnally want to thank you for all of the support you provided to NASDPTS over the years. During my 1995 - 2005 tenure with NASDPTS, I could always count on you for fair and balanced reporting -- a rare commodity in many media.

You have done an excellent job and it reflects on your character and work ethic. You should be very proud.

I look forward to your continued 'freelance' involvement in pupil transportation. I am sure you will provide some fresh insight on issues, since you will be a very informed writer who is now looking from the outside in.

Best of luck,

Charlie Gauthier

You have represented the industry well. In my conversations with you, you always have exuded professionalism and the desire to learn more about both sides of issues that transporters and others have discussed and debated over time. Best wishes and God speed. We look forward to your future contributions to SBF.

I think you have found a particular need and will be successful (I am not a editor, spelling maybe bad). Qualified school bus drivers and Technicians are hard to aquire.

Steve,
Instead of sorry to see you go, I'm glad to see you stay in other capacities as a leader to others with your transportation industry knowledge. Once a person gets bit by the bus bug in any form it stays with you forever. I'm in my twenty sixth year in the bus business and in six years look foward to semi retirement. I plan to move on to my next career in the bus field in some shape or form to give some of my own experiences to the new generation. Kudo's my friend and good luck ! Steve - You have helped to change the face of the industry! Your influence on the magazine will be noticed. I am glad for your new venture though, with budgets in districts all over being cut it is becoming more and more difficult to network among our peers. You have once again seen a need and with your usual dedication dove in to meet it!

Thank you for all your influences and best of luck to you in your new venture and your successors. Big shoes you leave behind!

Indeed, you will be missed by the school bus industry. I am intrigued by your new venture, “TransitTalent.com”. If that means you will be searching for qualified individuals to fill public transit positions I would recommend you also consider creating “SchoolbusTalent.com” as well.

Best of luck Steve, stay in touch.

It's doubtful I could add any more accolades to what's already been written above. Being new in the industry, I haven't know you for very long, but enjoy the magazine and your blogs thoroughly and always try to contribute something to your latest topic. All the best to you in the new venture. On-line media is certainly the wave of the future and I'm sure you're making a good move getting involved with the new technology. In the meantime, I'll look forward to establishing the same enjoyable and informative relationship with the present staff at SBF!

I seem to be a late-comer here. In January of 2007 I became the transportation coordinator for a public school system that currently has about 150 buses and drivers. It has taken until now to learn how much I didn't know.

I'm looking forward to learning from your magazine and your online sources. Perhaps one day I might be able to contribute something as well.

Thank you.
