A High-Profile Ride

As President-Elect Obama sent his 10- and 7-year-old daughters off for their first day of school in Washington, D.C., last week, I couldn’t help but wonder how they traveled.

I didn’t really expect the soon-to-be first daughters to climb aboard a yellow school bus, Secret Service agents in tow. But how great of an example would that have been for children and parents across the country?

After doing some searching on the Internet, I found footage of the Obama girls’ high-profile ride to school. Take a look:

We know that the school bus is the safest way for most kids to get to and from school. But when it’s the president-elect’s kids, I suppose the case could be made that they’re better off in a motorcade of Secret Service and police vehicles.

Till next time,

Tom

Wouldn't it also be nice if the President's girls would have enrolled in a public school? I guess the media will not leave them alone no matter where they go or what they ride in - but they have a fighting chance to privacy while secure in their limo and very private school.

If "youtube" is your best source for an editorial, maybe you should just hold off for another topic/inspiration. I know my blood does not run as yellow as most of your readers, but this seems like a tantrum not quite worth throwing.

In a perfect world the Obama girls would simply get on a school bus and go with the rest of the kids. Perhaps a little fuss would be made over because of who they are, but they'd pretty much be just another face in the crowd. What a shame that we've evolved into such a dangerous and litigious society over the generations. There was a time when there wasn't even a fence around the White House and anybody could walk in and talk to the president. If he was home, that is!

Geoff, in this country alone we have thousands of sickos just waiting for the opportunity to grab the offspring of the President for their own twisted agendas.

And I think we can go back to at least the time of JFK to find ample evidence of that.

That's part of the reason why it's so hard to find school bus drivers these days. The unfortunate fact is that even most of your neighbors haven't kept their noses clean enough to do the job.

A very sad commentary on American society in general.
