The bus stop is... a bus!

A reader from Georgia recently brought to our attention this school-bus themed bus shelter in Athens, Ga., and we had to find out more about it.

The bus shelter was designed by artist Chris Fennel for a national contest — You, Me and the Bus — sponsored by the Athens Area Arts Council and the Athens Transit System. Winning designs were selected for eight bus stops in the area.

According to the council, the project aims to enhance the public transportation system and improve quality of life in Athens by integrating utilitarian public services with artistic ingenuity and inspiration.

We just think it's nice to see a school bus living out its life in public service!

Pretty cool! Although this would never happen in California. Too many rules and regs. It would never make it pass the enviormental review process or earth quake standards for that matter.

Great, original idea.
Another might be to use some School Boards as lumber to repair some schools.

Its true, they'd never do something this cool in Ca.
They could have done this with a few Crowns they crushed. Pretty unique shelter.

What a great way to let the puplic know this is a school bus stop. This bus stop should make a safter bus stop for students. What a eye catcher!!

I saw this last spring while in Athens visiting my brother, and pulled over to take a picture. Protects the people waiting for their bus from the rain OR sun. Used as a cover for a public bus though, not a school bus stop. :-)

Nice Idea, by default the eye-catchiness makes it a safe place to wait for the bus. Just like the yellow bus, protecting our kids...

That is a great idea to recycle an old school bus and even transit, instead of paying thousands of dollars in money to have a bus stop shelter built.
wish and hope more people do that--I would place one in my yard if I have a bus stop there, but I am a school bus driver and collect ALL kinds of buses

This is awsome ! I am a Transportation Division Manager and would like to have these placed in my yards for the employees to take a break under.
