A Little Extra Help Goes a Long Way

I recently read about an interesting service offered by a transportation department at a school district in Houston.

Information on the transportation page of Aldine Independent School District’s Website indicates that the department has a nursery for its bus drivers, attendants and technicians. Employees who have children ages 24 months through fourth grade can utilize the nursery’s services.

The site says that while employees are on their route, a shuttle bus will take their children to the nearest Aldine school. If a child is not in school, the nursery staff will watch the child while the employee is on his or her route. After completing the route, the child must be picked up.

I am relatively new to the school bus industry (this month marks my second year with SBF), but this is the first I’ve heard of a transportation department providing this type of service for its employees, and I think it deserves commendation.

I don’t have children, but I have full appreciation for entities that make child care easier for working parents. My parents worked long and varying hours while I was growing up — particularly when I was in elementary school — so I was dropped off at a kid’s club at the school in the morning before class started and I stayed there after school until they picked me up after getting off of work.

I know that having a dedicated group of people to watch me during the week while my parents were at work put their minds at ease, and I can imagine that the same can be said for the drivers, attendants and technicians at Aldine Independent School District.

I’m curious if this type of service is available at other operations throughout the country. Does your school district or bus company offer day care or child care services for its employees? Or, does it offer other services for its employees that you consider unique or unusual?

If so, we’d love to read about them. Leave a comment below or send an e-mail to info@schoolbusfleet.com.

Until next time,

I don't believe it is unusual, but we help our drivers by allowing them to bring their children on the bus with them, whatever their ages.

What is unusual is that Fairfax County's school transportation also allows drivers to bring elderly parents, grandchildren, and partners' children. The drivers sign a release acknowledging that they accept responsibility for their extra passengers.

If there are problems with the extra passengers that distract the driver and interfere with transportation of the school children, we retain the right to insist that the extra passengers be permanently removed.

We limit the number of accompanying passengers to three children, and have had to work with a few drivers to find safety vests to restrain their active little ones. We have not had to exclude anyone from the bus.

since 1990 I have seen such a need for his type of child care---bus drivers coming in at 6:00 to work and not finding a baby sitter before the morning run. Which means that they need to find some one before 6AM -- they would have to bring in their kids to work and ride on the bus. So why not have a daycare at the site, even if they would have to pay the fee to have them watched. I wrote a paper on this at my college class..

thanks Aldine,

Dana

I am a product of Aldine ISD in Houston. I am the routing coordinator for our east facility. I grew up in Aldine, attended Aldine schools and I was a "Transportation Nursery Kid". My mom started driving a bus when I was 3 and my sister was 16 months. We grew up around transportation and came back to be drivers when we got older. Part of my education came from the transportation nursery. I am very thankful that my mom had somewhere safe for us to be while she worked. We became part of the transportation family in Aldine and have never left.

Thanks Aldine for contributing to my success!

I am Brigitte's little sister that started in Aldine's nursery at 16 months. Everything she stated is absolutely true. Aldine has always been there for my family from when I was 16 months old until now. More facilities should offer these types of services for their employees. By the way, the service is free for these Aldine employees!!!!
