Where do our old school buses go?

Would you believe “Jurassic Park”?

We’ve seen photos of old American school buses, painted over in a variety of bright colors and designs, that have taken on a new life in public transportation in Central or South America. But this is a surprising new example of a second act for our school buses.

Bus enthusiast Mateusz Pierog of Poland wrote to us about a place called “Jurassic Park Baltow,” which is about 100 miles from Warsaw. The park, situated in an area where many dinosaur bones have been found, features life-size models of such prehistoric behemoths as the stegosaurus and the diplodocus.

There is also a large wildlife area full of live animals that have, ahem, avoided extinction. This is where the school buses come in.

Pierog says that the park bought six yellow buses, each about 10 years old, from the U.S. in 2007. The buses carry visitors through the wildlife area so they can get a close look at ostriches, goats and other creatures on the loose.

The buses may not have to contend with real dinosaurs, but I hear ostriches can be pretty fierce.

If anyone has ever been on RAGBRAI, the bicycle ride across Iowa, you will see more old buses than you can imagine! I mean OLD!! They paint them with their team name and put "party racks" on top of the buses. They usually carry a mechanic/driver with them as most will not make it through Iowa in July without some tuning up along the way!

We have donated old school buses to area Fire Departments. The guys just love to cut them up. It feels good to know that if we had a severe crash our local firefighters would know how to get the children and driver out of the bus.

Many farmers purchase old buses for
feeding stations(ie) corn cribs, hay storage, grain storage. They move them into fields and remove wheels. They make great dry feed storage.

While stationed in Kuwait and Qatar in 2003, I saw a number of old school buses being used to transport the imported labor force. Most of the buses were still painted yellow and there were all makes and brands to include many no longer in business, i.e Superior, Ward, Wayne.

One of our Independent Dealers,(German Bus Sales ) cuts the top off old buses, thus making an open air vehicle, to better view the Wild Animals, in Ohio State Wild Animal Kingdom, located near Zanesville, Ohio. This is really reclaimed strip mining land, that has been turned into an educational program, visited by many during the summer months

I've seen the best painted schemes in Mexico but the best bus I've seen was at the 1994 RAGBRAi where the Bus had a giant GUMBY on the front and the top had a dancing platform. Pretty great bike ride to boot.

California is eliminating all 2-stroke diesel coaches from service. Air Quality requirement. We have numerous 1985 MCI tour buses looking for homes outside of California. We use these for School work. School buses in Central america have great paint schemes, done by hand and with rollers.

Old school buses are stripped, crushed, and sent to China. Then they are melted down and reincarnated into toys, tools and other metal goods we import (BCI Motor Coaches)

Old is a relative term. Many school buses are sold second hand before they reach retirement age. Reasons vary from schools no longer providing transportation to a school bus contactor losing a contract. Sometimes schools find they just need a different size bus. Many good used buses go to church's as well as the above mentioned places. Buses deemed too old or unsafe are often scrapped for it's metal.

When the company that. I work for retires old school buses they sell them off to other school districts. Or even day care centers and I can always tell when one of our old bus is sold cause I can still see. The name on the side and the number still remains. Also where I work which is in Southeastern part of wisconsin after 10 years of service school buses have to be pulled from service well. As far as I know it is only a few school districts in this part of the state other. Parts can keep older buses for longer then 10 years but then. Again the older the bus gets the harder it is to keep running because the parts become harder to get.

the district that I worked for about 5 years ago -- used an old crown bus and converted it into a wood shop for all the sites to have a wood shop class. The teacher would drive it around to the sites and conduct 1-5 day classes at each site

that was a good use of an old school bus

A retired Collier District School Bus was donated to East Naples Fire Rescue and now rests at the bottom of Lake Avalon to provide life safety dive training opportunities.

Here in Yuma County Murphy Brown has closed confinment barns for pigs. They buy old buses, remove the seats, and use the bus to haul pigs from one site to another.

My company buys old school buses from school districts and contractors. We go through the bus and upgrade and fix anything that needs it and then we can re-sale the bus into another school district who may not be able to affort 100,000 plus for a brand new bus. We are also able to provide third countries with very valuable buses.
