Heading to the Mall for School Bus Safety Lessons

I recently read an interesting item in a newsletter published by Missoula, Mont.-based school bus and charter motorcoach operator Beach Transportation Co.

The story said that two of the company’s drivers spent a Saturday earlier this year promoting school bus safety at a children’s fair held at a local mall. A Type A school bus was parked in the mall and the drivers encouraged kids to explore the bus.

Moreover, they distributed coloring books and handouts filled with bus safety lessons and explained to parents why passing a stopped school bus is illegal. The drivers also explained how parents can help their children be safe in and around school buses.

I don’t know if it’s possible for other operations to organize similar efforts at a mall or shopping center in their area, but this seems to me like a great way to spread the word to the general public about bus safety and the benefits of riding a school bus, especially because it allows you to speak with parents and children simultaneously.

It also enables you to reach a large group of people. I generally don’t like to shop for hours so I don’t go to the malls in my area very often, but when I do there is usually a substantial number of people stopping in walkways to window shop or people rushing in and out of the stores. (Another reason why I tend to avoid malls.)

What better way to catch these people’s attention than to have a bright yellow bus in the middle of one of those walkways?

Has your operation held such an event in the past? Or, has your operation held another type of event to promote and educate people on school bus safety? If so, I would like to read about it and how you went about organizing it. Post a comment below or send an e-mail to info@schoolbusfleet.com.

Until next time,

What a great idea! I will have to take a look at something like that. I also have a used Buster the Bus that I would like to use in a similar way. I wonder how other people have used their Buster Buses?

We were part of 'Safety Week' put on by the local Walmart. We had 2 buses, one a handicap w/ lift, and let kids and parents come on and sit in the driver's seat and the regular seats to let them know what a driver can see and hear. It was pretty well attended and seemed worthwhile for the drivers and the kids/parents.

One department that I worked for took a bus and hand outs/coloring pages to our town's Spring event. I also think that it would be good to take to county fairs or local/school events within smaller towns. Parades can be a good avenue for PR within a community.

We always had a bus parked at Chick-fil-A prior to the beginning of the school year. Two drivers would man the bus to talk with students and parents about school bus safety. It would also give the parents an opportunity to view the safety features of the buses. The local manager would give all children who visited the bus a free ice dream cone. It made for a great day!!

I concur with your analogy about the mall. We do encourage our drivers who do mall trips to speak to children/parents who approach them. I for the past 2 years with the help of our local Office Depot, copied school bus rules for our state on bright yellow paper and distributed them to hotels, motels, extended stay faciliies, car rental companies and cab companies in and around our airport just before school opens. I ask the hotels to post them on or near their maps/information kiosk. Car rental companies and cab companies, I tell please make as many copies as you wish, distribute them with maps or rental agreements.
