Bus makes memorable gift

Should every state’s governor have a model school bus in his or her office?  Dirk Kempthorne thinks it would be a good idea.

While Kempthorne (at left in photo) was governor of Idaho, Rodney McKnight and Ray Merical of the state Department of Education presented him a wooden bus from the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT). At right is Barry McCahill, a former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official who works with NAPT and is a comrade of Kempthorne’s.

The benefit of the bus, Kempthorne says, was that it was a constant reminder of children.

“So much of the role and responsibility of a governor is to do what’s right for children,” he says. “So I thought that was probably the best reminder of my responsibility, to have that school bus right in my office.”

Furthermore, he adds, “There probably ought to be one in every governor’s office.”

To read SBF’s exclusive Q&A with Kempthorne, check out the upcoming September issue. The former senator, governor and secretary of the Interior shares his insights on such topics as school budgets, alternative fuels and unfunded mandates.

Also, be sure to catch Kempthorne as he delivers a keynote address at this year’s NAPT Summit, to be held Oct. 31 through Nov. 5 in Louisville, Ky.

I think every Governor should have a model bus on his/her desk. The teacher is responsible for the education of the child and the bus driver is responsible for the life of the child.

Great idea! In fact in California it would remind the Govenor of the 20% cut he signed off on for school transportation!!!!

+1 Sam... maybe a full size school bus parked on the capital's lawn. I'm on the layoff list for 2010-2011... thanks Gov.

Well that is true here in California your punished one way or the other. At our district and others like us we have not put a drain on state funds never! we are funded from property tax (local) but now because our district and others like us are being punished for not needing state funds and having saved funds for the future, where other state funded districts that solely relied are in trouble because of that we are now fined because we are doing well (so what do you think fair not fair)

I also support this aim, to have a school bus in every school. As a mother, I always think the safety of my kids when they are at school. Providing a school bus thus ensures safety and therefore, eases my worries as a mom.
