How Do You Make Riding a School Bus Fun for Students?

The only time I rode school buses while I was in school was for class field trips, and it never overwhelmed me. However, I often sat by my friends on the bus and I usually looked forward to the field trips.

Had I been, say, an incoming kindergartner who didn’t know anyone at the school I was going to be attending and who had never ridden a school bus before, I would probably have a different story to tell. My first day of kindergarten was traumatic. I remember crying a lot and asking my parents — rather hysterically — not to leave. I don’t doubt that for some kids, the prospect of riding a school bus for the first time is just as frightening.

Fortunately for those kids, the school bus industry is full of folks who are friendly and go the extra mile to make students feel comfortable about riding a school bus. As just one example, last year, SBF spoke with Westerville (Ohio) City Schools Transportation Manager Bob Lynde about his operation’s First Time Riders program, which serves to reduce the amount of fear and anxiety students experience in regard to riding a bus. Has your operation implemented any programs or practices to help students look forward to riding a school bus? Tell us about them by posting a comment below or sending an e-mail to info@schoolbusfleet.com.

An additional resource that you may consider utilizing (or suggest to parents) to calm nervous students is the book I’m Your Bus by Marilyn Singer. In rhyming text, the bus lists its daily tasks, which not only include transporting kids to and from school but, also, taking care of students’ belongings that are left on the bus. (For more information about the book, visit www.amazon.com and search for "I'm Your Bus.")

Moreover, the buses are drawn with welcoming smiles (see photo above), helping to suggest that riding a school bus can be fun.

Until next time,

I am the Transportation Supervisor for Kent School District in Kent WA. Every spring we hold a "Kindergarten Roundup" at each elementary school for incoming kindergarten students. As part of the orientation, the kindergarten driver assigned to that school takes his/her bus to the school. The children and their parents board the bus and the driver explains bus safety and bus rules, hands each student a coloring book related to school buses and bus safety, gives each parent a booklet we have produced entitled "School Bus Gudelines for Students, Parents/Guardians", and then gives them all a short bus ride for a first-hand experience. We consistently receive positive responses from the parents and school adminstrators.

The other day the turbo charger pressure hose blew off of the engine on one of my buses. This caused a great loss in power. We instructed the driver to return to the shop for repairs. He had a hill to climb and the bus would barely go. This was a special needs bus and the driver instructed the kids to start rocking forward and back in their seats to help the bus go up the hill. The kids loved it thinking they were helping the bus go.

On Kindergarten Orientation day, 2 weeks before school starts in August, we run our kindergarten routes. We pick up an adult with their child and take them to and from school for Kindergarten Orientation. We do this on separate days for each of our Elementary Schools. Transportation staff members meet each bus and discuss bus safety and answer questions before they go in for orientation. What a great introduction to the school bus and the Transportation Department. This helps with any first day jitters for the kindergarten student, because they know what to expect. Parents get their pictures, learn about waiting at the bus stop, they get to see the bus, they can question the driver and teach their child how to use the seat belt. It’s such a positive day and almost every kindergarten student attends. Parents of twins love it because mom and dad can ride the bus. The schools love it because the parents can't linger and all arrive and depart at the same time. We have been doing this for 15 years. It has been very successful.

I am the trans director at our school district. We, too, have a Kindergarten / Pre K Orientation day. We hold this on the day before school starts. Our primary school routes run and pick up the K and Pre K students, with a parent, to transport to the school. The students meet their drivers and teachers and get to play on the playground. I personally give bus safety instruction, including having all of the parents program my office phone number into their cell phones. I put two drivers on the midday routes, as these are always K and Pre K students only. One of the drivers handles instruction for proper behavior and procedures, such as holding the handrail and crossing the street. I continue to send two drivers for the first week of school to reinforce our expectations and acclimate students to riding the bus. This orientation alleviates a lot of apprehension for both students and parents and receives very positive feedback. We have been doing this for the past 8 years.

I sing Happy Birthday to children who are having birthdays, I decorate the bus, I have a "haunted bus" on Halloween, I make homemade crafts for holidays with their names and I play random game with them.

Working with children 3 and 4 yrs old in Head Start, we have several procedures:
(1)Before the start of school in Aug we have open house for parents and children,to tour the bus and get acquanted.
(2) We have what we call transitions, when a child starts in mid year, to get acquanted, etc
(3) We have booklets on bus for the monitors to show children about the bus and leaving home.
