How did you start your pupil transportation career?

Many of the people whom I and my fellow editors have met and spoken with during our time with SBF have worked in the pupil transportation industry for many years — some for two- or three-plus decades.

A lot of those individuals started their careers as school bus drivers and worked their way up to their current position. Others found themselves drawn to the industry while working in another field. For instance, Randy Mazie, director of the John Schee Transportation Center at Miami-Dade County Public Schools, previously ran transportation services for the elderly. When he would pass by a particular school bus yard, he thought about how he wanted to work in a place like that. Once a position opened, he applied, and then began his pupil transportation career.

Bob Riley, executive director of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, became a high school driver education teacher after graduating college. This led to his enrollment in the Traffic Safety Master program at the University of Maryland. He completed the program while teaching and broadened his interests in all facets of traffic safety to include pupil transportation.

Riley told SBF, “Once I started working directly with pupil transportation as state director in Wyoming, I was hooked.”

(For more information about Mazie's, Riley’s and other transportation officials' careers, check out the 2009 edition of our Fascinating Personalities feature here.)

In recalling these stories, I became interested to learn how you got your start in the school bus industry. Post a comment below or send an e-mail to info@schoolbusfleet.com.

Moreover, while thinking about pupil transportation-related careers, I became curious about how many of you know of young people who are interested in working in the industry in some capacity.

Several years ago, I wrote a feature called “A Leadership Gap Looms” wherein transportation officials suggested that a lack of interest from younger workers and a shrinking pool of qualified individuals will contribute to a gap in leadership in the industry as veteran employees retire.

Shane Kirley, 20, of Canastota, N.Y., is one exception to the view that many of today’s teens and twenty-something people aren’t interested in the industry. As SBF reported last year, Kirley has been passionate about school buses since he was in grade school and was eager to work in pupil transportation.

Kirley currently works as a clerk in the transportation department at Alternatives Industry, a division of Madison Cortland ARC. (ARC's mission is to provide people with developmental and physical disabilities with opportunities and support throughout their life.) He told SBF this week that he still keeps in close contact with the staff in the transportation department at Canastota Central School District, where he interned in 2009.

"They keep my 'drive' to better myself in the industry alive!" Kirley said, adding that he still hopes to become involved with the bus sales portion of the pupil transportation industry.

I wonder: In the years since I wrote “A Leadership Gap Looms,” are young people like Kirley becoming the norm, or is his interest in the industry still rare? I’m interested to read your thoughts on this.

Until next time,

My interest in the having a career in school transportation began almost as soon as I could walk. My grandmother, who herself drove a school bus for 30 years, recounts that as soon as I was old enough to crawl up the steps of her bus, I started playing on it. She parked her bus beside her house and throughout my childhood, it was my playground. I drove thousands of miles and never moved! My desire to drive only grew over those years and led me into reaching my dream of driving a school bus. I drove a school bus for 12 years while also teaching school. I'm now 36 years old, and while no longer behind the wheel, my fascination has never waned. I even bought three of my grandmother's five school buses when the school district retired them.

At 24 years of age, I decided to return to finish my college education. I applied and was hired by Plainedge Public Schools as a PT School Bus Driver.Which was to help support my living expenses.

Low and behold 30 years later, I am now retiring from the same school district from the postion of Supervisor of Transportation! During my working years I was a School Bus Driver, Assistant Dispatcher, Assistant Supervisor of Transportaion, and finally Supervisor.

And Now upon my retiremant I have been approved as a School Bus Attendant! The only thing I don't know how to do - is run our VCR!

Luckily I was nice to people on my way up - as I will be working with them as a NEWBIE!

I was attracted to the Conventional Buses and then the students hooked me.

I started working as a bus attendant when I was 19 years old for 3 years and then became a bus driver driving students and adults with special needs in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1986 my husband and I moved to Ft. Myers, Florida and I started driving school buses for Lee County. In 1993 I was appointed Driver Trainer and then in 1995 I became an Assistant Supervisor which of course took me to the next level as Supervisor. In 2005 my husband and I relocated to Okeechobee, Florida and once again I am the Driver Trainer. I love working with the trainee's before and after they become bus drivers and it is very rewarding you see how much they care about their kids.

I talk special needs students for 16 years - all levels from Behavior disorder/physically handicapped, ADD, Learning Disabled, Developmentally Delayed, vision impaired, hearing impaired in a variety of setting. I then worked as an Asst Principal for 7 years - still in the special education areas for the majority of time. I chaired IEP teams, wrote behavior plans, mentored new special education teachers, evaluations, etc. At that time there was an opening in the Transportation Department for a Supervisor whose primary responsibility was working with the drivers/assistants/students on special education buses. I represented transportation in IEP team meetings, etc. After 10 years in this position, I applied and now serve as the Transportation Director for the system.

I drove delivery trucks for auto wreckers then moved up to container trucks, crane trucks for a metal recycling plant. Their trucks were never quite up to appropriate safety standards. At that time,I decided to get my licence and drive a school bus. In 25 years, I have been a bus driver, dispatcher and now the Transportation Supervisor.

I have loved all 3 jobs but do miss seeing the students out there on the buses!

I was a young mother of three beautiful little girls and in need of an income, but I didn’t want to put them in daycare and have someone else raise them. A friend told me to try driving a school bus because they allowed drivers to take their own children to work with them. I went with great hesitation when filling out the application with the visions of myself maneuvering that big yellow truck around the road ways. I had doubts, but to my surprise I couldn’t believe how nice it worked out; driving the large vehicle was fun, we had great moments and many lessons learned from the students on board, and I got the evenings, weekends, holidays and the summer months off to spend with the family. Once my girls got older, I moved into the office as the Safety and Training Technician and helped with the hiring of new drivers/attendants and the accidents reports. The opportunity for the Safety & Training Instructor came up and I moved into that position; I do the classroom instruction, on-road training as well as the CDL road tests. Although I’ve had a lot of guidance from co-workers and great training offered by my supervisors, I have learned the most from those that I’ve trained. It’s been 19 years since I started in the transportation industry; I love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else.

I began my career when the school bus driver of my younger, mentally challenged brother offered me an application to go to work for the school district. I had been looking for a part time job, while completing my college education when the opportunity to drive a school bus was made possible. I worked for 2 years as a bus driver, left for a year to work in communications engineering and found that my heart belonged to school busing. I've been working in school busing ever since.

I drove a bus to help supplament my teaching salary in 1979 when our first child was born. In December of 1980 I interviewed for the position of Maintance and Transportation Director at the district I worked for, Mansfield ISD, Mansfield Texas. We had 22 buses, 6 schools and 2,200 students and a district of 110 square miles.
I had a great boss Mr Rogene Worley and a mentor at Arlington ISD , Mac Cope who helped mold me into the school transportation professional I became. I attended the Michigan State School Transportation training conference in 1987 and became active in NAPT Certification Program from 1990 till I retired in 2010.
School Transportation has been a great and rewarding profession and I am proud to have had a part of it.. Today, Mansfield has 210+ buses and over 36 schools with a student pop. of 31,000.... Joe R Glover

I was downsized, and put out to pasture. So I retired early, got me CDL and worked for a contractor for two years doing charters. After that, I applied and was hired by a med size district and fell in love with special needs. I have been driving special needs for two additional years and love it. It's the parent contact and the satisfaction I get from seeing the kids progress, slowly but surely.

I started driving a school bus to put myself through college. Once I started driving I loved it and realized that I had found a career. In the beginning I was driving for a large district in Monterey, CA and found myself as the senior driver in only 5 years. Most of the drivers were doing the same thing I was doing, driving to put themselves through college. I have continued to drive a school bus over the years and now am ready to enter my 4th decade. 10 years after I started, I moved across the Monterey Bay to a school district in Santa Cruz and still love what I am doing. I drive as well as repair the school buses. I am also a trainer for my school district. In all the time that I have been a school bus driver I have seen a lot of changes, in traffic, students and attitudes toward the school buses.

Having served as a junion high, high school and university English teacher, I because a supervisor and later an assistant superintendent. As a division head, one of my administrative departments was Student Transportation. When the Director was transferred to another position, I had to assume the Director's duties on a daily basis for several months until a new Director was hired. This happened three other times during my seventeen-year tenure as Assistant Superintendent. When I became Superintendent, it was a comparative cake walk! Since retiring from the school district twenty years ago, I have continued to work in the vineyards of student transportation, and I love it dearly!

I began 38 years ago as a driver for a mom and pop company to supplement my income and pay the $300 a month mortgage on my new $17,000 home. Became involved in safety and training by offering my ideas and plans to improve working conditions and assist drivers in their daily challenges of driving a School Bus. The owner approved of my ideas and I was on my way. Years later Ryder acquired the company and the owner recommended me for a full-time region safety position available with Ryder. Ryder was to become the best company I ever worked for. As time moved on I became responsible for 20+ locations and a major contributor to the success of Ryder Student Transportation. Years later Ryder sold the business to the Preferred Employer. I continued on until early retirement and then worked for the Preferred Employer as a driver and planned to completely retire after 40 years.

When a company acquires another company it is said that nothing will change. People and business practices do change. Unfortunately I didn't achieve 40 years in the business I loved so much.

I always said that after my kids were old enough I was going to get a job driving school bus. I actually started as a bus aide for Head Start in January, but was really more intersted in being a bus driver. When a position opened up, I expressed my interest to the Transportation Manager. He trained me and I was ready for the new school year. That same Transportation Mgr., two years later was trying to convince me to take over his job, But I kept saying "No way".....well a year later he turned in his resignation and I applied for the job. That was twelve & a half years ago. I am still currently Transportatiom Manager of CDS Lakeshore Head Start and I have learned alot over the years. I love working with the pre-schoolers..never a dull moment.

Drove 18 wheelers until fall of 1983 was hired again as T & M Dir stayed until I retired in 2005, during this time I trained drivers and gave third party CDL tests. During those years saw many improvements in buses and transportation procedures. I still drive as a Sub and do new driver training.

My father started contracting school buses in 1952, when I was five years old. I started driving driving a bus in 1968 after I was discharged from the Marines. My father stayed in he business until his death in 1997. The business then went to myself and two sisters which didn't work. I bought them out in 2001.
