Do you have a second job?

Nail tech Rebekah Summers drives a bus for Trigg County Public Schools in Cadiz, Ky., while also running her business, Perfect 10 Nails.

One of the things I enjoy about my job writing for SBF is getting to know our readers — learning about their families, where they grew up, any traveling they’ve done, etc.

Another facet that I find interesting is how they spend their time outside of the school bus operation that they work for. Last year, I wrote a blog post titled “What Do You Do in Your Free Time?” where I focused on a couple of hobbies held by pupil transporters in California and Virginia.

More recently, SBF learned of a school bus driver in Cadiz, Ky., who also serves as a nail technician.

Rebekah Summers began driving a school bus for Trigg County Public Schools in 2002 and she is also the owner of Perfect 10 Nails inside a barber shop in Cadiz. Summers runs routes for the school district in between running her nail salon.

In addition, I learned that Dawn Coffin, director of transportation at Maine School Administrative District (MSAD) #37 in Harrington, holds a second job during the summer months.

Since 2004, Coffin has driven a bus for Island Explorer, a free shuttle service for Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and other surrounding communities.

“My job at MSAD #37 is full time, but I am only required in the office 190 days a year, so the Island job is a great way to be able to be in the park all summer while still getting my work done at home,” Coffin told me.

Coffin usually works three days a week and says that she often transports tourists from all over the world who travel there or are on cruise ships. She also transports park rangers and covers for other Island Explorer drivers when needed.

“I do have fun with them all, and it also makes their vacation a memorable one. I often hear from them later,” she adds.

Outside of my job for SBF, I volunteer for a nonprofit cat rescue and adoption group in Redondo Beach, Calif., called PURRfect Partners. During the week and on weekends, I take video of our adoptable cats and kittens, update our social media sites, help organize fundraising activities, send out e-mail newsletters and work on other projects to spread the word to the community about the group and its mission.

I’ve been volunteering for PURRfect Partners for three years, and it’s very rewarding.

Do you have a second job, or are you heavily invested in volunteerism or a hobby? If so, I’d like to read about it. Post a comment below or send an e-mail to info@schoolbusfleet.com.

Until next time,

I am the Secretary for Maintenance and Transportation for the Sheridan School District #37 located in Sheridan, Arkansas. I also have another job. At one time I had two other jobs. I work full-time for the school district as the secretary and I also drive a regular route school bus. Two days a week you can find me at our local Shell Station taking care of customers. I retired as a USSSA/ASA umpire in 2007 where I had spent 27 years on a softball field umpiring games from youth to men's. I have had to cut my extra jobs back considerably due to the fact that I know have custody of my two grandchildren, ages 5 and 2. So that, in and of itself, is a full-time job also. But I always said I would stay working at the Station as long as I was having fun and that's what I'm doing. The owners, Wallace and Donna Freeman, are great folks and were very understanding when I had to cut back on my hours. I have worked for the Sheridan Schools for 23 years, 21 in Transportation. I have worked for the Shell Station for the past 6 years. That job is my fun job. There's not a lot of stress and I enjoy talking to the different folks that come in the store.

What most people find amazing about me is that during this last year, I fought a battle with breast cancer. Had surgery, chemo, and radiation all the while working all of my jobs. And I am proud to say I didn't miss much work at all on any of them! And to boot, I am clear of any signs of cancer at this time!

I guess as long as I'm able, I will keep on working. I enjoy all my jobs and the people I work with. Makes have to work all that much more enjoyable!

 Hats Off to Ms. Harris

Wow. My hat’s off to you, Ms. Harris! God bless you for all you do and have done – and a breast cancer survivor and not missing much work through all of it to boot. You are a walking miracle, a glowing example of hope, and your good spirits shine through to us, your readers, in your writing. What an uplifting and upbeat story to share with us.

I just wanted to say that I, too, work second jobs. In addition my full time day job as a director of transportation, at night I love to work on graphic illustrations which I showcase through my retail web site www.schoolbusmart.com, I also love to write. My most recent work is in this month’s issue of School Bus Fleet, How a Fair Can Assist and Energize Your Staff(http://www.schoolbusfleet.com/Channel/Management-Training/Articles/2012/06/How-a-Fair-Can-Assist-and-Energize-Your-Staff.aspx?ref=Newsline-20120612&utm_source=Email&utm_medium=Enewsletter). I post many of my graphic works and creative writing pieces on both on of my blog sites at www.goneyellow.wordpress.com and www.thewritersvillage.wordpress.com.
